A Do It Response for a Can Do City.

The Downtown Transportation Study is a “DO IT” response to the SA2020 challenge “DREAM IT, MAP IT, DO IT.” Safe and efficient downtown transportation can catalyze new development and transform the downtown experience for residents, business owners, employees and tourists alike. The Study will align with the HemisFair Park Area Framework and Master Plan, VIA Streetcar and Multimodal Plans and the City’s new Bicycle Master Plan and Complete Streets Policy.

Why so much focus on downtown?

Simply put, San Antonio must grow with the times and position our downtown to attract businesses and residents to balance our robust tourist industry. The City wants to ensure downtown has the capacity to manage automobile traffic, streetcar and bus transit, travelers using rail, cyclists and pedestrians, while providing a quality experience of the Alamo City.  Better ways of getting to and around downtown will be developed, since getting here is as important to people’s experience as efficient travel within the City. The Transportation Study will generate the analysis and planning needed to develop transportation improvements that support the SA2020 vision.

Study Area

More specifically, traffic and transit analysis, using updated traffic counts and transit data, will create the basis for the study. New street typologies that demonstrate the concept of “complete streets” will balance the needs of different travel types – such as pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders and drivers. A future conditions analysis will anticipate the development planned for HemisFair Park, the planned streetcar, greater numbers of downtown residents, and employees.  Public involvement sessions at critical planning junctures will engage and inform citizens. The plan will be complete in May 2012.
